Is this the final season of Xabi Alonso as a player?

Xabi Alonso is only a few months away from reaching the end of his contract with Bayern Munich and rumors are suggesting that this might just be the very last season of the Spanish midfielder before he hangs up his boots.

The experienced midfielder is 35 years old and despite being at such an elevated age, Xabi Alonso is a regular starter in the team of Carlo Ancelotti. Ever since Alonso joined Bayern Munich on August of 2014, he has played a huge role in the German squad as he is part of a dominating midfield that has helped Bayern Munich in securing the Bundesliga for 2 successive seasons as well as the DFB-Pokal during the season of 2015-16 and the DFL-Supercup in 2016.

When Carlo Ancelotti was asked about Xabi Alonso and the role that the Spanish player fulfills in Bayern Munich, the 57 year old Italian manager said:

"Yes, the truth is that he is slow but I was also slow when I played being slow is not necessarily a negative thing. The most important thing is that the ball runs quickly through the team, and Xabi Alonso is one of the best players at distributing the ball."

Whether or not Xabi Alonso decides to retire and hang up his boots after the current season is something that remains to be seen or confirmed as this is nothing but rumors. Alonso himself has not replied or talked about these rumors and only time will tell if the experienced midfielder does step away from the world of football or if he decides to continue performing for at least 1 more season which is something that Alonso is indeed capable of doing despite being 35 years old.
