RUMENIGGE DEFENDS PLAYERS

The Bayern Munich chief Executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has come out in the defence of the players after they were criticised by the Bayern Munich legend Franz Beckenbauer after having finished runners-up in all the three major competitions in the last season.

Bayern Munich failed to win the domestic title after they finished the season in the second position, while Borussia Dortmund managed to retain the title. They also lost to Dortmund in the final of the DFB Polkal cup, while they were defeated on penalties in the Champions League final as well. This has led to criticism from the Bayern Munich legend Franz Beckenbauer, who has stated that the Bayern Munich players did not work hard.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, though, has said that the players performed to their best, but were unlucky not to finish as the winners in at least one of the competition. Beckenbauer had earlier claimed that the players were only performing at the 80% best, which contributed to the downfall in all the three competitions. This is the second time in the last three seasons that Bayern Munich have finished as runners-up in the Champions League. However, they were hoping to win their fifth European title because the match was played at their own ground.

"I can remember that we would often play together in European Cup games on Wednesday and then on Saturday we would be a little tired and sluggish. So, this is not a modern phenomenon, it used to be about before. Attitude is something you must always have. It is not something that you should have to demand," said Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in his interview. Bayern Munich have not made a great deal of signings this season, but Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has said that he hopes there will be some key arrivals in the summer.
